Online Gambling

Online gambling is a hot topic in the United States. Many states have started to legalize online sports betting and poker. In the near future, most Americans will be able to place bets on their favorite sports teams or casino games from the comfort of their homes.

While there are many different aspects of online gambling, one of the most important is the federal laws that are in place. The United States has enacted a number of criminal statutes in this area. These include the Travel Act, the Wire Act, the Illegal Gambling Business Act, and the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) provisions.

There are also a variety of UIGEA provisions that prohibit the activities of illegal Internet gambling businesses. Among these is the provision that prohibits financial transaction providers from accepting payments from such illegal Internet bets.

The most impressive of the laws is the one that enables the government to seize financial instruments from persons who are engaged in an illegal Internet gambling business. For example, if the owner of an Internet gambling business is caught conducting business without a license, he or she could face up to five years in prison.

A similar measure is the one that permits the Federal Communications Commission to halt the furnishing or maintaining of facilities that are used to conduct unlawful Internet gambling. Similarly, the Federal Communications Commission can slap fines on the owners of Internet gambling companies for failure to meet data security standards.
